Benchmark
Standardized task used to measure how well a device or system operates.

There are many types of benchmarks. A benchmark for a microprocessor is a certain calculation. Different microprocessors can be rated by giving them the same benchmark calculation to perform, and comparing the speed and accuracy with which they find the result. Manufacturers often run benchmarks on their devices under ideal conditions, which may not indicate how well the device will perform in the real world. Wags like to joke, “In the computer industry there are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and benchmarks.”
